Patio furniture cushions.
What happens when some squirrels get a hold of the cushions on your patio set and shred them to pieces? You get a whole new set of custom made cushions, of course! And this is exactly what I was hired to do for this project.
I sourced out all new foam inserts (which by the way, are not cheap and this is what most often is the most expensive component of custom made new cushions!), and as soon as the customer purchased and delivered all the fabric, I got straight to work.
I made a total of 7 cushions; three seat and three back cushions for three chairs, and one ottoman cushion. The seat and ottoman cushions have quality firm foam inserts, while the back cushions are a little softer. All foam inserts are lined with a thick layer of batting to add a layer of soft comfort to the cushions.
The covers are all sewn out of an exterior textile, which the customer had chosen in a really pretty grey/black/light olive floral pattern with black piping along the edges. In order to break up the floral pattern, she opted to reverse the fabrics on the ottoman; solid black for the cushion and floral for the piping. All covers were sewn a little smaller than the actual foam inserts, which yielded a perfectly snug and fitted cover with absolutely no bunching, shifting, or loose fabric! Each cover has a full-length zipper so that it can be removed (to be laundered or changed for example), if necessary.
To reinforce the seams, I double stitched all the corners.
Although it's unfortunate to lose perfectly good patio cushions to the mischief of back yard scoundrels, it's a great opportunity to revive your outdoor space! By simply changing out the cushions (or even just the slip covers if your foam inserts are intact), a much loved patio set can get a new breath of life and not only look brand spanking new, but trendy all over again! So if you're looking to spruce up your back yard, updating the cushions on your patio furniture is a great place to start.
