Rustic wood shelf.

This is a wood shelf I built to go on a wall above a counter top in our master ensuite. Instead of a piece of art, I opted for a shelf for two reasons; I needed extra storage space and the bathroom was desperate for style, so I wanted to display a few bathroom essentials decoratively. 

The design for this shelf was purely directed by the left over wood inventory in my garage. My rule was NOT to buy any more wood! I used a piece of 12" wide pine plank and a couple of 2x2 wood pieces.

I cut the plank into three equal pieces to make the shelves and the 2x2s were inserted into notches in the shelves vertically along the back. 

Each shelf is supported by metal brackets, sprayed in flat black. For a more rustic look, I added washers behind the screws. 

Stained in a medium-dark walnut stain, the grain of the knotty pine wood is accented beautifully.

Small black L-shaped brackets on the corners of each shelf give an industrial edge. 

At about 12", each shelf is deep enough to hold a few bigger/bulkier items such as a large soap jar, or a square mesh wire basket. The metal brackets provide lots of support so heavier items can be placed without a worry. 

I love the way this shelf turned out. I used up some left over wood, black spray paint, and stain, so the only expense were the metal brackets, which were very inexpensive.

It's design is super simple, but this shelf makes a big statement in what used to be a pretty plain bathroom!
