Buffalo plaid infinity scarf and mittens.
Buffalo plaid... those lovely red and black squares. My first and only plaid love. I'm not usually into plaid... not that I hate it... I don't mind it, but I don't like it enough to own any plaid article of clothing. Until now.
When I saw this fabric, it was love at first sight. I happened to be casually browsing the winter stock at my local fabric store and there it was. This lovely, thick fleece in the perfect shade of red. And when I realized it was lined with a soft, cream fuzz... that was it. I ran for the cutting table without hesitation!
My original plan for this fabric was to make a set of a scarf and mittens for each of Ava's two teachers at school for Christmas. I figured the teachers already receive enough gift certificates, ornaments, cookie mixes in a jar, a million other trinkets, knicks, and knacks, that maybe they'd appreciate something a little different and handmade. Seeing as how even someone like myself who usually loves sequins, glitz, and glitter, could fall in love with buffalo plaid, I thought it was a safe choice for the teachers too. This is currently the season's hottest plaid print after all, so I felt like it was a good pick.
As I got sewing, I realized I had purchased enough fabric to only make those two sets. No big deal. I already own many scarves and mitts, I don't really need anymore winter accessories. But, when I completed this project, I was so in love with these items that this "want" became a "need"!
I returned to the store to purchase a bit more fabric but, as luck would have it, my store AND every other one in the area was all sold out!!! After an exhaustive search, I finally happened to locate some and drove out all the way to the other side of Hamilton just to pick up what seemed like the very last piece of this fabric in the entire GTA!
I'm so glad I made that drive! The scarf and mitts are perfection! The plaid is beautiful in the most ideal shade of red, the fleece is so soft, the fuzzy lining is very cozy, and overall, the mitts and scarf are truly one of the warmest I've ever worn!
Not only that, but the set is super stylish and looks great whether I am casually running out to the store or dressing up for a fancier outing. The scarf is an infinity scarf, which means it is sewn as a continuous loop. Twisted once over the head, it is a perfectly snug fit that will keep the neck and even the ears toasty!
These make a wonderful gift! Not only for teachers, but everyone could benefit from a warm set of winter accessories; moms, sisters, aunts, grandmothers, girlfriends, babysitters... anyone really! These make a great stocking stuffer too!
