Wood slice floor pillows.
I've always loved floor pillows. They are usually plump and cozy and a great way of adding extra comfortable seating in a decorative, fun, and affordable way. That said, when a customer inquired about these super awesome wood slice pillows, you can bet that I immediately fell in love with them! Unfortunately, I cannot take credit for this brilliant idea and design, but I was more than happy to recreate them for a customer who didn't want to pay extra shipping and duty fees by ordering from etsy.
I worked with the customer to design the perfect pillows to fit her son's woodland-themed room; a set of three wood slices, all 10" in diameter, two pillows 8" thick, and one 12" thick.
I selected to sew the pillows out of fleece for three reasons; my local fabric store carries fleece in a wide range of colours so I had no trouble finding the colours I needed; two shades of brown to make the bark, and a peach/sand colour for the natural, raw wood. Secondly, fleece is super soft to the touch so it would make these pillows cozy and inviting. Finally, it's a pretty durable textile, so this fabric is very likely to withstand daily play. I opted to use a brown cord to represent the round grain on the faces of each slice.
As I began working on the pillows, I decided to improve the original design of the bark. On the original pillows from etsy, the dark brown bark details were a lot more scarce. I felt the slices would look a lot more realistic if it had additional bark detail. Although it was a little bit more labour intensive, cutting out the dark brown pieces and sewing them on individually, it was worth my efforts.
The bark turned out pretty great and resembles the real thing quite well!
The pillows are FIRMLY stuffed with hypo-allergenic polyfill to ensure that they retain their plumpness and fullness as much as possible.
