Coolest coffee table idea. Ever.
What do you do when you need a large coffee table on a budget?... Cut up your old leather jackets, of course!
So, we needed a nice coffee table. BUT... it needed to be super large to fit in the very wide space between our couches, and it could not cost a pretty penny. We shopped around forever, it seemed like, and could not find a coffee table that met all our criteria. So what do you do when you can't buy it? You make it!
This project idea was inspired by a large square coffee table I came across at Urban Barn... problem was that it still wasn't size-y enough and it cost way too much than what we were willing to spend on some fake veneer. The plan was to purchase some old leather jackets at Goodwill, chop them up into thin strips, and adhere them to an MDF cube we custom sized and built to perfectly fit our space. Low and behold, this idea actually turned out fantastically and we now are owners of the coolest coffee table you'll ever see (and a couple of side tables to match)!
And you want to know the best part? All three pieces cost only about $100 in materials! Mind you, it was a very time intensive project where I spent a healthy number of late evenings doing nothing but gluing leather strips, but it was worth the effort. It's been 5 years since I've made these pieces, and even in our new home, we still adore them. When our tiny little humans joined our family, we had a local glass shop custom cut tempered glass to place on top to prevent little sticky hands and the occasional spills from damaging the top surface.
